WWZ – Battle of Suez 1953

(Real History paraphrased) In 1952, the British attempted to disarm an Egyptian Police Battalion in Ismailia that resulted in over 40 deaths. Anti-western/British riots followed. This caused more deaths, and violence escalated. The Egyptian Monarchy was over thrown in a coup, and the Republic of Egypt was established. Tensions among the Arab states escalated between not only themselves, but also England and France. The US, deep in The Red Scare, was concerned about Soviet influence in the area. The US wanted the best of both worlds: Support England, France and NATO in the region, but also wanted to keep the soviets out of the Mid-East, and of course did not want to disrupt or lose access to the extremely important Suez Canal. The US was opposed to military action by France, England & Israel. War came to the Suez in 1956 when Egypt nationalized the Canal and locked it down. France, Israel and England invaded to retake the Canal.

In this Alternate History mission, war comes sooner, in 1953. England and France decide that perhaps Now is a good time to secure the Canal for themselves, rather than having to work out a lease deal with the newly formed Republic of Egypt’s government. They sail a Carrier into the middle of the Great Bitter Lake, and quickly take over a few of the land bases on the lake’s shore and lock down the Canal to shipping traffic. This triggers reactions from many nations. Egypt is armed with old, but still effective German surplus. The United States Expeditionary Forces, which was quickly re-commissioned at the end of WWII for just this kind of ‘unofficial’ military intervention, supplied American aircraft and ‘advisor’ pilots. The USSR gladly sold Egypt some surplus Red Air Force aircraft, trucks and tanks, along with their own Advisors, much to the chagrin of America. So now, in an unusual twist, Egypt has the support of the United States and the USSR while the opposing forces are primarily England, France and the still young Israeli state, using mostly American ground equipment from the war.

You find yourself in the area as a pilot in this rapidly escalating conflict. Pick a side, pick a plane, pick a job, and join the Battle of Suez, 1953!

Special Considerations for this Particular Mission

This Mission does use objects and models from the World War II Asset Pack, which is a paid add-on. I know, it sucks, and should be free. But, I also really wanted this to feel like WWII/early Post WWII era and having Panzers and Shermans and Flying Fortresses and such was just a better fit for THE VISION than the default mostly cold war type ground assets.

This mission is also just Warbirds. We don’t have any early 50s helicopters in the sim, so I felt, like the ground assets, having a huey or hind running around would mess with THE VISION. Don’t worry though, I’m going to whip up a Cold War/Modern version of this that will have helos and jets and all the cargo and troop hauling stuff you want!

F-86 does not have the AIM-9B sidewinders or M117 750lb GP LD Bomb
